About Boccia

Boccia is a target sport similar to bowls, originally designed for athletes with Cerebral Palsy. Athletes participate as individuals, in pairs or in teams. It is one of the fastest growing Paralympic sports and is played in over fifty countries worldwide.

The sport was first introduced into the Paralympic Games in 1984 in New York. Boccia is unique in that there is no Olympic equivalent, as in track & field and water sports. Boccia differs greatly from the other Paralympic disciplines as the players participating have the severest disabilities and are physically unable to participate in other Paralympic sports.

Boccia has been specifically developed for those with a high degree of Cerebral Palsy and other conditions such as Muscular Dystrophy. These disabilities commonly prevent participation in those sports requiring a certain level of strength and coordination.
